Principal’s Report
Enrolling Kindergarten Students now for 2019 |
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Term 3 has been another very busy term. A big thank you
to all teachers and parents for your work together to ensure children are
provided with great learning experiences and opportunities.
LAST DAY OF TERM 3 – Friday 28th September (
Students & Staff )
FIRST DAY OF TERM 4 – Monday 15th October (
Students & Staff )
Sydney West Athletics
On Wednesday 19th September over 15 children represented
the Blacktown Area in the Sydney West Athletics carnival. This is a very
difficult competition, against other Zones from Sydney West.
Congratulations to all the boys and girls who represented our school and
area proudly!
A thank you to the parents and families who attended this carnival, to show
their support and cheer for the children.
Chess competition
On Tuesday 25th September a group of 12 Year 3 to 6 boys and one girl represented Blacktown South PS in a Chess competition. It was a very competitive day with many schools from the Blacktown area competing. A big thank you to Mrs Catalano for organising this opportunity for the students and also transporting them all to the venue, with the help of Mrs Radecki and Mrs Francis. We were awarded 3rd Place for one team and 1st place for another team who will go onto the next level of the competition.
Group Photos
Group photos all ran smoothly on Monday 24th September thanks to Mr Arundel and parents for ensuring that students were appropriately dressed for sport, SRC, Year 6 and extra curricular photos. Once the photos have arrived further information will be provided to students and families.
Enrolling Now - Kindergarten Students for 2019
If you have a pre-schooler or have neighbours or friends
with pre-schoolers in our drawing area who are turning 5 years of age
before the 31st July 2019, please see the school office for an enrolment
application. If your child is turning 6 in 2019 they must attend school
next year.
Our kindergarten orientation program starts in Week 3 of next term on
Tuesday 30th October.
Please contact us about 2019 enrolments now.
Token Fun Day
Once again we had an awesome experience despite the weather. Children and parents and teachers were engaged in lots of fun activities and many opportunities to receive prizes. Thank you to our wonderful parent community who supported this event with an outstanding effort in the donations supplied. Without the amazing community effort this would not have been as successful a day as it was. This year we managed to raise over $15,000 for the students at Blacktown South Public School. Showbags, jumping castles, face painting, hair spray and lots and lots of jelly and food made for a very exciting time. Well done Blacktown South Public School, days like today show what wonderful safe, respectful learners we all are.

Intention to apply for Year 7 entry to a Selective High School in 2020
If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2020, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).
Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from mid-September 2018 at the link below.
https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7
The application website opens at that link on 9 October 2018 and closes on 12 November 2018. You must apply before the closing date.
There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance after 9 October 2018.
You must submit only ONE application for each student.
We wish all students, parents and staff a safe and relaxing holiday!

Blacktown District (Hassall Grove) Chess Tournament
On Tuesday 25th of September, Blacktown South Public School participated in the Blackown District Chess Tournament held at Hassall Grove Public School. The School Opal Card
Busways has asked all parents who have children catching a bus to remind them that they must remember to tap on at the beginning of their trip and off again at the end of their trip. This is a condition of using the School Opal Card.
Data being gathered shows that not all students are doing this. If students do not tap on and off, services may be cancelled due to the lack of recorded patronage.
Please remember it is the parent’s responsibility to maintain/update any changes of details, this will ensure you will receive new Opal cards as requested.
POP Payments
A reminder to parents making payments through the POP system to please check that you have logged into the correct school. We have had a few instances lately of parents from other schools paying for excursions etc through our school’s account, this creates quite a bit of paperwork to reverse the transaction.
To make a POP payment simply log onto Blacktown South Public School’s website and click on the $ icon which will direct you to our school’s POP portal.
Thank you
Claire Dobbie
Healthy Canteens
From the start of Term 3, the canteen has had a new menu that has lots of new healthy items.
We are phasing out the less healthy items and replacing them with fresh, natural ingredients that will be made from scratch on the premises.
Although the new Healthy Canteen guidelines do not commence until 2020, as a community, we want to be the first in the region to make the changes.
There are lots of amazing new foods that the kids will love.
Healthy Canteens whole philosophy is to provide your children with healthy alternatives. Michelle and Kristy, our canteen ladies, have built up great relationships with the community and all of the students, and it’s time to phase the non-healthy alternatives out of the canteen for good.
Each day, the kids are so eager to try the fresh cooked food, and the sales of our healthy counter items have significantly increased, so the time is now to make the change.
Healthy Canteens is only going to get better as we truly want what is best for our students.
Thank you.

Australian Early Childhood Education Development Experience (AECEDE) Research Project
Parents needed to help us build a complete picture
Our school is participating in the Australian Early Childhood Educational Development Experience (AECEDE) Research Project which will add to the richness of the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) undertaken earlier this year. The project explores the impact of early learning experiences on children’s development, at home and in early education and care services. This research will help policy makers better understand how children’s education and care experiences in the years prior to starting full-time school can be delivered in a way that best supports children’s development and learning.
The project is being conducted by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training, and supported by the NSW and NT Departments of Education and researchers from the Telethon Kids Institute and the Social Research Centre.
The Primary Caregiver Survey, will take place from 10th September to 2nd November 2018 and will invite parents and caregivers to complete a short survey about the early childhood education and care history of their child, as well as information about their parenting style and the child’s home environment. This is an important perspective that only the parent/primary caregiver can provide.
Parents/caregivers of children in Kindergarten have been sent an invitation to complete the Primary Caregiver Survey online. Paper versions of the survey will be available from our school for caregivers without suitable internet access, or for whose first language is not English. Support will also available by phoning 1800 092 548 where parents/caregivers will be assisted to complete the survey over the phone.
Children at our school will directly benefit from parents/carers participation as we will receive a voucher to be spent in support of the children, if most of the caregivers complete the survey.
Whilst your participation is entirely voluntary, our school will receive a voucher to be spent in support of the children, if most of the caregivers complete the survey. I sincerely hope that you are able to complete this survey.
Please click on the link below to begin the survey:

School Banking
School banking is on every Tuesday. To join school banking, your child will need a Youthsaver account. If your child doesn’t have an existing Youthsaver account, there are 2 simple ways to open one:
- Visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account, or
- Visit any Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for you and your child (Driver’s licence and birth certificate) and they will assist you in opening up a Youthsaver account.
Students earn 1 token for each time they bank and once they have earned 10 tokens they are eligible for a reward. There are 2 rewards available each term. Don’t forget once you have 10 tokens fill in your rewards slip and send it in with your bankbook. If you don’t have the rewards slip please send us a note in your bankbook and we will send one home with you.
Remember, it’s not the amount you deposit; it’s the consistency of banking that will help you to earn great prizes!
A reminder to all our bankers can you please ensure you fill in ALL parts of your deposit slip including name, student number, account number, date and amount being deposited. We have had several students not completing their deposit slips and this is very time consuming for us to have to fill them all out. If you fail to complete your deposit slip your bank book will be returned to you and the money will not be deposited.
